Research Interests
Polymer and materials synthesis. Biomedical applications of polypeptide materials. Emphasis on application of chemical principles toward these ends as well as the use of biological precedents and strategies for the design of new materials. Research in the Deming group is focused around new, practical chemical routes for the synthesis of biological and bio-mimetic materials. These materials are being studied since they can be prepared from renewable resouces, they can be biocompatible and biodegradable, and often possess excellent physical properties. We are utilizing modern principles and techniques of chemistry and biology as the means to achieve our goal of synthetic materials with superior properties. This interdisciplinary approach stimulates innovations and ideas which direct these fields into new, exciting areas.
Education
8/89 - 10/93 University of California Berkeley, CA
Ph.D. in Chemistry. Research encompassing polymer synthesis using organometallic catalysis, elucidation of polymerization mechanisms, and physical properties of helical macromolecules. Ph.D. thesis research with Dr. Bruce M. Novak.
9/85 - 6/89 University of California Irvine, CA
B.S. in Chemistry. Magna Cum Laude. Undergraduate research with Dr. William J. Evans, 6/87 - 6/89. Research activities involved exploration and expansion of the chemistry of cerium(IV) through synthesis of alkoxide and organometallic complexes.
